NPR employees gathered for a crucial meeting last year to receive an update on the future of the public radio network. “We are slipping in our ability to impact America, not just in broadcast, but also in the growing world of on-demand audio,” shared Daphne Kwon, NPR’s chief financial officer, during the meeting.
Accusations and Internal Strife
In recent weeks, NPR has been embroiled in turmoil following accusations of extreme liberal bias made by a senior editor. The editor, Uri Berliner, criticized NPR for prioritizing race and identity over diverse political viewpoints in its news coverage, potentially alienating its audience.
These allegations, published in an essay on The Free Press, sparked backlash from conservatives, including former President Donald J. Trump, who called for NPR’s public funding to be revoked. Internally, journalists defended their work, refuting Berliner’s claims of biased reporting.
