NATO’s Efforts to Provide Air Defence Support
On Friday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urged member countries to supply more Patriot missile systems to Ukraine in response to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s repeated requests for Western air defence equipment. During an online meeting of defence ministers from the 32-nation alliance, Stoltenberg highlighted the need for existing capabilities to be made available to Ukraine.
Patriot Missile Batteries and NATO Allies
Ukraine is seeking at least seven Patriot batteries to counter the threat posed by Russia’s air force. Stoltenberg did not disclose which NATO nations have air defence systems or the exact number that could be provided, citing classified information. However, he emphasized the importance of allies stepping up to support Ukraine with not only Patriots but also other weapons such as missiles, artillery, and ammunition.
- Germany, with a total of 12 Patriot batteries, has agreed to supply three to Ukraine.
- Poland, which has two Patriots, is balancing its own defence needs with aiding Ukraine.
