“Oh, Mary!” Broadway Transfer Announcement
“Oh, Mary!,” an outrageously madcap comedy that envisions former first lady Mary Todd Lincoln as a chanteuse-wannabe with a penchant for inebriation, is set to make its Broadway debut this summer after gaining unexpected popularity downtown.
The brainchild of Cole Escola, an alternative cabaret performer known for his cult following from YouTube sketches and appearances in Hulu’s “Difficult People,” the show has been delightfully irreverent and historically inaccurate.
The Broadway production, slated to commence previews on June 26 and officially open on July 11 at the renowned Lyceum Theater, is scheduled to run through September 15.
Originally staged in January at the Lucille Lortel Theater in the West Village, “Oh, Mary!” has seen its Off Broadway run extended twice due to overwhelming demand and critical acclaim. The current Off Broadway show is expected to conclude on May 12, boasting sold-out performances and drawing a host of celebrities such as Bowen Yang, Timothée Chalamet, Amy Schumer, and Jessica Lange. Notably, one evening saw a surprise visit from Steven Spielberg, accompanied by Sally Field and Tony Kushner, adding to the star-studded audience.
Scripted by Escola and helmed by director Sam Pinkleton, the Broadway adaptation will feature the original cast led by Escola as Mary Todd Lincoln and Conrad Ricamora as Abraham Lincoln. The production is backed by producers Kevin McCollum, Lucas McMahon, Mike Lavoie, and Carlee Briglia.
