Some of Spain’s most popular seaside cities and villages are set to be linked by an exciting new train line project. The €2.5 billion initiative will extend the existing route from Malaga to Fuengirola along the stunning Costa del Sol. Proposed by a group of engineers, railway experts, and regular commuters, this expansion aims to enhance travel convenience and connectivity along the sun-drenched coastline beloved by tourists.

Expanding the Rail Network

Expanding the Rail Network

Railway specialists have unveiled a comprehensive plan to broaden Spain’s rail network by connecting Malaga and Marbella through the picturesque Guadalhorce valley. The group envisions reducing travel times to a maximum of 45-50 minutes between these coastal resort cities, a significant improvement from current transportation options. The new rail system will also offer easy access to essential facilities such as the Costa del Sol hospital and bus station.

The proposed route options include stops at both inland and coastal destinations like Mijas, Alhaurin de la Torre, Coin, and Alhaurin el Grande. Additionally, the line could extend beyond Marbella to San Pedro Alcantara, providing travelers with exciting day trip opportunities from the cities.

  • Mijas Costa: A 12-kilometre stretch of beaches and tourist resorts, including the charming La Cala de Mijas, a former fishing village.
  • Mijas Pueblo: Situated 10 kilometers inland on the slopes of the Sierra del Mijas, this village boasts whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers.
  • Alhaurin el Grande: Known for its traditional white architecture, this town features the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church, which preserves Gothic rib vaults from an ancient castle.

Moreover, Alhaurin el Grande is home to a 120-year-old olive mill that offers delightful tastings for visitors to enjoy.

Solving Housing and Integration Challenges

While the new train line promises enhanced travel experiences for tourists, it also holds significant benefits for local communities. According to train driver Pablo Marín, the rail connection will help structure the province in terms of population distribution. Additionally, it can address housing challenges by offering more affordable options inland and foster social integration among residents living in remote areas.
