Israeli Military Intelligence Head Resigns Over Hamas Attack

The Israeli military announced on Monday that Aharon Haliva, the head of its intelligence corps, has submitted his resignation due to the failures surrounding Hamas’ unprecedented attack on October 7. This attack breached Israel’s renowned defenses and resulted in significant casualties.

Hamas’ attack on October 7 claimed the lives of 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians. Additionally, approximately 250 individuals were taken captive during the assault. The incident triggered a six-month-long conflict against Hamas in Gaza.

Following the attack in October, Haliva publicly acknowledged his responsibility for not preventing the assault. In response to his admission, the Israeli military released a statement confirming that the military chief of staff has accepted Haliva’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service.

Haliva’s decision to resign may pave the way for other top security officials in Israel to acknowledge their roles in the attack’s prevention and consider stepping down from their positions.
