Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Monday that the UK’s first deportation flights to Rwanda could take off in 10-12 weeks. This initiative aims to fulfill a key policy promise of the government before the upcoming election.
Legislative Deadlock Over Deportation Policy
Sunak addressed the Parliamentary deadlock over the deportation policy in a news conference, emphasizing the urgency of passing the legislation. The House of Commons and the House of Lords are set to debate the bill today to resolve the impasse.
Challenges and Controversies Surrounding the Deportation Plan
The government’s plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda has faced legal challenges and opposition from various groups. The proposed legislation, known as the Safety of Rwanda Bill, seeks to address concerns raised by the Supreme Court regarding the safety of migrants deported to Rwanda.
Rishi Sunak: “We are ready. Plans are in place, and these flights will go come what may. No foreign court will stop us from getting flights off.”
Alex Carlile: “The amendments are designed to improve ‘ill-judged, badly drafted, inappropriate’ legislation that is ‘illegal in current UK and international law.'”
