Assessment of Destruction in Gaza
The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, compared the devastation in Gaza to the damage seen in German cities during World War II. An assessment by the World Bank and the United Nations estimated that rebuilding Gaza’s infrastructure would cost $90 billion (€84 billion). Borrell stated that over 60% of physical infrastructure has been damaged, with 35% completely destroyed.
EU Parliament’s Response
Borrell addressed the EU Parliament, condemning the killing of humanitarian aid workers, journalists, and civilians by the Israel Defence Forces. He emphasized the need for Israel to respect international law and protect all civilians and humanitarian workers.
UNRWA’s Challenges
The commissioner general of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, highlighted the challenges it faces due to attacks on its reputation. This came after allegations that some UNRWA staff had assisted Hamas. The agency aims to rebuild trust with donors and partners following the fallout from these allegations.
Protests Against German Support
During German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s visit to Turkey, pro-Palestine protests were held, criticizing Germany’s support for Israel in the Gaza conflict. Demonstrators marched past the German consulate in Istanbul, denouncing the weapons exports from Germany to Israel and calling for an end to the military support.
