Arrest of Russian Official Ivan Ivanov

Ivan Ivanov, who was arrested on Tuesday, appeared in court in central Moscow on Wednesday morning, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee. He is suspected of taking an especially large bribe, a criminal offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Ivanov will remain in pre-trial custody.

Investigators stated that Ivanov is accused of conspiring with third parties to receive a bribe related to contracting and subcontracting work for the Ministry of Defence. His acquaintance, Sergei Borodin, was also arrested on the same charges and ordered into pre-trial detention. Both men will be held in custody until at least June 23.

According to the defense ministry’s website, Ivanov was appointed to his position in 2016 by presidential decree. He was responsible for overseeing property management, housing, medical support for the military, and construction projects.

Russian media reported that Ivanov was involved in construction projects in Mariupol, a city in Ukraine’s partially occupied Donetsk region. The city was heavily impacted by the conflict with Russian forces.

In 2022, Ivanov was accused by opposition activists of living a lavish lifestyle, including luxury trips abroad, extravagant parties, and elite real estate. Allegations also surfaced regarding his family’s lifestyle and financial activities.

Transparency International ranks Russia 141st out of 180 countries in its Corruption Perceptions Index, reflecting the perception of corruption within the country.
