Arrest of German Lawmaker’s Aide

An aide to a German lawmaker in the European Parliament has been arrested on suspicion of spying for China, Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office said Tuesday. The arrest took place on Monday in the eastern city of Dresden.

Suspected Espionage Activities

Prosecutors accused the arrested individual, identified as Jiang G., of working for a German member of the European Parliament since 2019 and passing along information about parliamentary deliberations and decisions to Chinese intelligence. Additionally, he was alleged to have spied on Chinese opposition groups in Germany.

Reactions and Denials

The Chinese government denied any involvement in the case, stating that the espionage allegations were not new in European public discourse. Meanwhile, German officials, including Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, described the allegations as extremely serious, calling it an attack on European democracy.

Should the allegations against Mr. Jiang G. be confirmed, it could result in the immediate termination of his employment, as stated by lawmaker Maximilian Krah, to whom the aide was affiliated.
